Roof painting looks straightforward from the ground. In practice, preparation and process are what separate a coating that lasts from one that fails. Here’s exactly what we do on every job.

Step 1 — Roof Inspection Before any work begins, we carry out a thorough inspection of your roof — looking for cracked or broken tiles, damaged ridge caps, deteriorating pointing, rust on metal roofs, and any signs of underlying structural issues. There’s no point painting over a problem.

Step 2 — Repairs Any issues found during the inspection are fixed before painting starts. This might include replacing broken tiles, re-bedding and re-pointing ridge caps, sealing rust spots, or securing loose flashing. Coating won’t seal a crack or hold a failing ridge cap in place — repairs come first.

Step 3 — Roof Cleaning This is one of the most critical steps, and one that gets rushed on too many jobs. We use a minimum 220-bar pressure washer to remove surface dirt, moss, lichen, grime, and any loose material. All seams, joints, and roof edges get particular attention, using a file brush where needed. Where required, a water filtration system is used and water stoppers are positioned in the guttering to manage runoff. A clean, properly prepared surface is what makes a coating bond and last.

Step 4 — Priming Once the roof is clean and dry, a quality primer is applied. The primer seals the surface and ensures the topcoat adheres properly. Skipping this step is one of the most common shortcuts taken in cheaper jobs — we don’t skip it.

Step 5 — Roof Coating Application With the surface properly prepared, the coating is applied using products suited to the specific roof type — whether that’s terracotta, concrete tile, Colorbond, or corrugated iron. We apply a minimum of two coats as standard, ensuring consistent coverage across the entire roof surface.

Step 6 — Final Inspection and Clean-Up Once the coating has cured, we carry out a final quality check with you. Gutters and surrounding areas are cleaned up, protective coverings are removed, and we don’t consider the job done until you’re satisfied with the result.
